Dixie dog is a traditional hot dog variety that's believed to have origins in Huntington, West Virginia. It consists of a split hot dog roll and a blubbery hot dog sausage that's topped with chili sauce and creamy coleslaw. In West Virginia, Dixie dogs are not called Dixie dogs but simply slaw dogs or hot dogs.
"Another excellent hot dog variation is a slaw dog, topped with sweet, creamy coleslaw. Better yet: a chili-slaw dog, with slaw atop the mustard atop the chili atop the dog. This one is tricky to eat, but its complexity is a pleasure."
"Head to J. S. Pulliam Barbeque in Winston-Salem, N.C., and order the Chili Slaw Dog. They've been making them for over a hundred years. The dogs are red; the buns are buttered and toasted. I order mine with slaw, mustard, onions, and always, always, always a big spooning of Ed's Hot BBQ Sauce."
"The best hot dog in my life. I have eaten bratwurst at Lambeau Field, chili dogs in Yankee Stadium, and dozens of other hot dogs in dozens of other noted locations and restaurants. None, I repeat, none, can hold a candle to the cheap little slaw dog at Bunyan’s."
"Nothing I’ve eaten is going to make me detour half a day for another helping, but if I am near Hendersonville and the yearning for a pale pink frankfurter topped with mustard, onions, mildly spicy beef chili and sweet, creamy slaw strikes (as it often does), I know where to go."
