Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemum is a pre-Prohibition cocktail that combines dry vermouth, absinthe, and Bénédictine —a rich herbal liqueur from France. The ingredients are poured into a mixing glass filled with ice and are then mixed until chilled.

The amount of vermouth and Bénédictine can vary, but modern interpretations usually rely on Craddock's 2:1 ratio in favor of vermouth. Some versions also include lemon juice. For a long time, it was believed that the recipe was first published in Savoy Cocktail Book from 1930, but it was later discovered that the first known mention dates to 1916 and Hugo Ensslin's Recipes for Mixed Drinks.

The Savoy Book states that the Chrysanthemum was a favorite at the American bar on the German ocean liner SS Europa. Chrysanthemum is usually served in a coupe glass and comes garnished with an orange twist.
