Trnovečka makovnjača is a simple cake that is a specialty of Trnovec, located in the suburbs of Varaždin. The dough is rolled and stretched until very thin, brushed with butter, and spread with a combination of ground poppy seeds, milk, and sugar.
The whole concoction is rolled and baked in the oven. It is recommended to bake the cake in a clay pot, as it gives the dish a unique aroma and flavor. Trnovečka makovnjača was invented more than 200 years ago, when people could not afford to bake cakes with other ingredients, and poppy seeds were abundant and readily available in the region.
