Italian grappa is distilled from fermented pomace—solid components of grapes that are left after the juice has been pressed. The taste profile of grappa varies, and each variety is distinguished for their unique character that depends on the choice of raw materials, distillation, as well as nature and the length of maturation.

The basic distinction is made between grappa bianca, which is aged in stainless steel, and golden varieties that are traditionally aged in large barrels. Through history, grappa was mainly associated with northern parts of Italy, but today it is produced throughout the country.

Lagrein is an ancient Italian red grape mainly cultivated in Trentino-Alto Adige in Northeast Italy. The grape has ancient origins, and though it was once common, it was later mainly replaced by Schiava (Vernatsch), which proved to be more resistant and productive.

Only recently, local winemakers have been promoting it as an excellent native grape that, if treated properly, has incredible potential to produce rounded and well-balanced wines. The grape is used in varietals (included in several regional appellations) and blends.

Hugo is a refreshing Italian cocktail that combines elderflower syrup (or elderflower liqueur), Prosecco, and a spritz of seltzer or sparkling water. The original version was made with lemon balm syrup, but since elderflower syrup is more available, it became the prevalent option.

The drink is made by adding all the ingredients in a glass filled with ice. It is mostly served in a red wine glass and usually comes garnished with mint and sometimes with lemon or lime wheel. The cocktail was invented in 2005 by Roland Gruber, a bartender who was working in Vinschgau, South Tyrol.

TasteAtlas food rankings are based on the ratings of the TasteAtlas audience, with a series of mechanisms that recognize real users and that ignore bot, nationalist or local patriotic ratings, and give additional value to the ratings of users that the system recognizes as knowledgeable. TasteAtlas Rankings should not be seen as the final global conclusion about food. Their purpose is to promote excellent local foods, instill pride in traditional dishes, and arouse curiosity about dishes you haven’t tried.
