Ukazi

(Okazi, Afang)

The ukazi plant (lat.

Gnetum buchholzianum) is a climbing vine that is native to tropical Africa, and is a close relative the eru plant. The ukazi plant has thick, dark green leaves that are tough in texture and slightly bitter in taste. These leaves are used in various traditional dishes in West and Central Africa.

They're typically shredded and used in soups or stews. Ukazi leaves are rich in proteins, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are also known for their potential medicinal properties, which include analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects, among others.  Read more

In terms of cultivation, the ukazi plant grows best in humid, tropical climates, and it is typically found in the wild. It can grow on a wide range of soils, but it prefers fertile, well-drained soils. Like the eru plant, the ukazi plant is often harvested from the wild, which has led to concerns about overharvesting and deforestation.

Efforts are being made to promote more sustainable cultivation practices.
