WHERE TO EAT The best Mole negro in the world (according to food experts)

1

Restaurante Casa Oaxaca

Oaxaca de JuárezMexico
Calle de La Constitución #104-A
Recommended by Rough Guides and 2 other food critics.
"The contemporary Oaxacan restaurant of the Casa Oaxaca hotel proved so popular that it outgrew its origins and has to move out. It still serves some of the best food in town, with mains like turkey in mole negro."
2

Azul Histórico

Mexico CityMexico
Calle Isabel la Católica #30
Recommended by Condé Nast Traveler and 3 other food critics.
"Muñoz is a gastronomic historian who is precise and dogmatic when it comes to time-honored recipes. His spicy and chile-laden mole negro de oaxaca is legendary."
3
Recommended by Chicago Tribune and 3 other food critics.
"The next night we ate at El Sabor de Oaxaca, where we had one of the great meals of our lives. I had mole Oaxaqueno con pollo (chicken with black mole sauce)."
4

Hierba Dulce

Oaxaca de JuárezMexico
Calle Porfirio Díaz 311
Recommended by Matthew Kronsberg and 1 other food critic.
"The kitchen operates under the watchful eye of “Mayora” Georgina Cruz, who tutored many of Mexico’s best chefs in the art of mole. She offers seven varieties, including a radically good mole negro, served enchilada style over potato-filled tortillas and sprinkled with a crumbly almond “cheese”."
5

Las Quince Letras

Oaxaca de JuárezMexico
Calle de Mariano Abasolo 300
Recommended by Sarah McGrew and 1 other food critic.
"I had the pleasure of going to a Restaurant called Las Quince Letras, where I ordered Mole Divorciado - mole negro and mole rojo served over chicken and rice. Mole negro is by far my favourite, so far, because of the complex flavour created by the clashing spice of the chile and the sweetness of the chocolate."

Catedral Restaurant

Oaxaca de JuárezMexico
Calle de Manuel García Vigil Núm. 105
Recommended by Hidden Corners
"If you’re looking for a nice, delicious, traditional restaurant, this is it; and has been for the past 40 years! Everything we ordered was spectacular, black mole was our favorite. You can also ask the waiters to recommend a mezcal cocktail to go with your dish."

Recommended by Lonely Planet and 2 other food critics.
"La Carta de Oaxaca is easily one of Seattle's best lunch and brunch spots. Those who crave authentic Oaxacan-style cooking will swoon at the house special mole negro Oaxaqueño (chicken or pork in a chocolate and chili sauce). Whatever you order, expect serious flavors."
8
Recommended by Julie Doherty Meade
"Here, you’ll find tasty Oaxacan-style mole, as well as a nice selection of mezcal. The rich, slightly sweet mole negro, which combines chocolate, chiles, and spices, is made fresh in house."
9

Los Pacos Oaxaca

Oaxaca de JuárezMexico
Av Belisario Domínguez 108
Recommended by Suzanne Barbezat
"The most famous is mole negro, the black mole—a thick, rich mixture of ground chiles, nuts, chocolate, and other ingredients. But that's not the only type of mole you'll find here. Los Pacos specializes in these rich sauces and you can sample seven different kinds to compare and see which you like best."

El Escapulario

Oaxaca de JuárezMexico
Calle de Manuel García Vigil 617
Recommended by El Grito Taqueria
"Some of the best moles on the trip including a great version of the Oaxacan black mole. Small intimate space on the second floor near Santa Domingo."
